Overgrown & Overwhelmed

So, it was time for thinning. Tomatoes looked crazy and overgrown and we had to put a stop to it!Don’t they look much better now? Here’s the before in case you forgot what this looked like last week…

I hadn’t expected to get to clearing this out on a Sunday evening, but when I went out to check for ripeness, it just made me crazy, so I got the clippers. Most of the fruit you see in the above photo was full of worm holes anyway, so now the plants are thinned out so that I can more closely monitor for pests. Should have been pruning and thinning all along!

Also went ahead and pulled out the Black Beauty eggplant. Honestly, I wouldn’t grow that one again. Fruit was small and had way too many seeds. The Classic eggplant is still going strong as are the peppers! Gathering an abundance of Blue and Cream Cherry Tomatoes right now as you can see on the right side of the photo behind Marino the Chicken. They’re delicious!

In the Beginning

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
