Heat Wave

This week, the sun is blazing on the garden…with highs in the 90’s all week, we’re making sure we’ve watered well!

A hodgepodge of items this week….

We hit week 11 this past Saturday and the garden is doing very well! We got one cherry bomb pepper this week! I stupidly picked it and ran right in to chop it up and add it to chili. Whoops – didn’t get a picture of it. Sigh. It was beautiful and not too spicy hot. They’re about the same as a jalepeno on the Scoville heat scale, so it seemed about right.

The cilantro seems to have run its course. It is getting yellow and we’ll pull it this weekend. This isn’t a surprise since cilantro traditionally doesn’t do well in heat. Have I mentioned it is in the high 90s this week?

All of the tomatoes and peppers are coming right along. The Hillbilly and Mr Stripey plants are getting really heavy with green fruit. Can’t wait to see how they ripen!

The one that you can’t see here is the Silvery Fir tomato that we’re growing from seed. It is now about 4-5″ or so. Almost the same size as the tomatoes that we got in May. It seems to be withstanding the heat, so I am crossing my fingers.

Stay tuned for week 12!

In the Beginning

vegetables

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
