Update for week 14 – sadly beets were a bust. These were planted from seed and it was apparent that they went in too late. The heat didn’t allow for them to grow. In the ‘bust’ category also – garlic chives, swiss chard, brussel sprouts. Since I’m listing the issues here, I can also let you know that the chamomile didn’t sprout at all and the tat soi isn’t growing. Lesson learned, though, on growing these items in colder weather and I’ll be ready for fall planting! Since its so hot, nothing further will be planted until August (after consulting my experts – thanks Kirsten and Lynne!) We’re pulling carrots tomorrow and the preview today shows tiny carrots will be in the offing…the heirloom radishes were bigger!
Now the good news! More tomatoes and peppers! Aren’t they just beautiful? The tomatoes are weighing in at over 1 pound each! So far, we’ve got over 10 pounds of tomatoes!
More peppers too today. I haven’t sliced into the cayennes yet – tomorrow is the big day.
Funny story about the holy mole peppers. I sliced the very bottom of one and tried it. No heat at all – tasted like a sweet bell pepper. So, I sliced it in half and chopped it up. Dropped a piece from the top of the pepper in my mouth and set it on fire. Oops – apparently the very bottom was not representative of the whole. It was delicious, but such a surprise. Since this is supposed to run about 700 on the Scoville scale and the cayennes are in the 30,000 – 50,000 range, that should be quite a difference.
And now for a flower – the zinnias are doing amazingly well. Beautiful red/orange blooms! We might have sunflowers in a week or so!
Stay tuned for the cayenne report!
