I’m sure that Texas folks will be happy to argue for or against “Hook ‘Em Horns”, but I’m talking tomato hornworms.
Found one of these bad boys chewing a tomato this week. He was summarily reduced to green goo. Now we’ll keep an eye out for any more that are lurking! Also – found another tomato with a concentric ring on it – see here:
After some research, it appears this is a cracking issue caused by environmental conditions.
Here’s what happens when a tomato cracks:
- Tomato plants get too much water too fast.
- A tomato’s interior grows quickly as it absorbs the extra water from rain or disproportionate watering, but it expands too fast.
- The tomato skin can’t stretch to accommodate the extra fluid.
- Cracking alleviates pressure.
This one is still edible and we plan to enjoy it!
Cool weather seasonal planning is underway. Right now, we’re thinking:
- broccoli
- spinach
- arugula
- beets
- carrots
- flowering broccoli
- tat soi
- kale
- radishes
- maybe butternut squash?
Planting for these vegetables won’t begin for another month or so…
