Summer’s End

Summer is officially over now that school is back in session and it seemed like the right time to clean up the garden and get the fall seeds planted.

You can see the bed ready to start the root vegetables! Thanks mostly to our GrowJourney subscription (organic seed of the month club) we planted Chioggia Beets, Mixed Beets, Cosmic Purple Carrots, Kaleidescope Carrots, Kohlrabi, Brusssel Sprouts, Broccoli De Cicio, Russian Frills Kale, Sprouting Broccoli Hon Tsai Tai, Misato Rose Radish, Swiss Chard and Tat Soi.

2015-08-17 18.27.47As you can see, the peppers and tomatoes are still coming in, so they stay. You can also see the garlic chives coming back in the photo above. We’ve still got some lettuces and spinach to put in, but will wait another few weeks. You’ve got to love how fast radishes grow – only three days in and we’ve got these!

We also added some Earthen Organics worm castings to each square in order to revitalize the soil. I can’t wait to see how this jump starts the new plants! At $15 for enough to improve 100 sq ft of soil, this seems like a bargain!

We also had tomato issues from the heat (I think). Some leaves brown and dead:

Not pretty. I have to check to see if theres more to it than just heat, but for now I clipped off all of the offending branches. Left the plants looking much better!

It did turn my hands green, though!

See how much we trimmed off?

Finally, the zinnias are still going strong – one of the blooms here for your enjoyment! The pollinators love them!

In the Beginning

vegetables

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
