It’s winter and that means peas!

It’s February and time for planting peas. I was actually a week late getting these done, but we had pesky weather last week. A high of 32 on Sunday followed by ice on Monday. After a bit of a disappointment this weekend, the sugar snaps got planted today.

My plan was to fill up the beds and get them ready for the season. Then, winter greens were going in – spinach, lettuces, mustards, etc. So off to the garden center we go…

  • 4 different composts – check
  • Earth worm castings – check
  • Peat moss – check
  • Vermiculite – check….wait…. paid for it, but you’re out? Sigh. It will be in late next week, so we’ll have to go back for it. Can’t make the Mel’s Mix for Square Foot Gardening without it, so we’re on hold for the greens.

I did pick up a few bags of what was labeled “potting soil” that the expert at South Pleasantburg Nursery said was amazing.

2016-02-21 10.27.24Since I didn’t want to wait two more weeks to plant peas, I used this today after noting that it had 5 different types of compost, peat moss and pearlite (like vermiculite) all in it!

It turned out to be light and airy, just like Mel’s Mix, so hopefully it will work well.

I also used Pea and Bean Booster to help the plants. Without getting too technical, this is a bacteria that helps peas take nitrogen that is naturally occurring in the air, and “trap” that useable nitrogen, through its root system, into the soil to use as fertilizer.

So excited to start growing again! Stay tuned for winter greens…

In the Beginning

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
