First Day of Spring?

Happy first day of spring! But wait….what is that the weatherman is saying?

FREEZEWARNING

Yikes? All those tender new greens could be in danger…

So – here’s the deal. We’ve got a freeze warning tonight and tomorrow night. The weather folks are warning that tender plants could be damaged. So, we’re going to get them ready! The beds are all happy now…

I guess we’ll cover them with sheets – but we’ll need to make sure that they aren’t squishing the new plants. So – Greg’s a genius! We’ll use extra bamboo canes to drape them over…

Stick them in the corner of each upper bed…

Then drape sheets over them…

So all set, right? Nope. It’s going to rain before it gets freezing temperatures. Weather channel says…

Rain from 9-12 then temps possible as low as 29 !?! So – now to waterproof this set up. Out comes the tarp that we had handy. Drape it over, zip tie the grommets on the sides and weigh it down on the corners so it doesn’t blow away.

Buckets half filled with water weigh down the front and the pre-filled planters weigh down the back corners.

The snow peas got brought into the garage.

Is this overkill? Probably. But we’re so excited about greens, we don’t want any vestiges of Old Man Winter to come by and kill them. All-in-all, the total of 15 minutes it took to get this all done makes me feel better.

Happy First Day of Spring!

In the Beginning

vegetables

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
