Now that the greens are picked and we’re planning a week of salads, it’s time to get the empty squares filled up and update on the summer vegetables. Out Garden Chicken is supervising as you can see
First, let’s move things around a bit. We’d planted the lemon thyme and the oregano in one spot. They’re now moved into their permanant spots. You’ll note that I moved the dill as well. I want to plant melons in the top square! The final square in this level is filled with parsley seeds.
I also moved the Romanesco Cauliflower into it’s own pot. It was totally overshadowing the eggplants. (see bottom left bed) Not sure how it will do, but thought it was worth taking a chance.
Oops. This happened about 10 minutes after transplanting. I was careful to dig deep and get all of the roots, so maybe this is just shock. We’ll have to see. By the way – how about the zucchini in the big pot in the background? Growing huge!
The top right corner is where the dill was moved – now the melon (cantaloupe) is planted there.
The left bed gets two squares of Tat Soi and two squares of pollinator flowers. The tomatillo is doing very well too!
Pots in the back – far left are the cucumbers and in the foreground, a ground cherry. What – never heard of a ground cherry? They’re in the same family as tomatillos, but are kind of a forgotten fruit.
From my friends at GrowJourney:
The flavor is out of this world: a mix of tropical pineapple and sweet tomato. This was once an extremely popular heirloom fruit in America, and it should be again! Ground cherries have been a staple in our summer garden ever since we first tried them years ago.

On this side, the sad Romanesco Broccoli, an heirloom zucchini just planted and the zucchini planted a few weeks back.
All in all, looking good!
