There Be Giants!

Giant radishes, that is. This is what happens when you leave your French Breakfast Radishes in the ground too long. You probably can’t tell, but those are fist sized radishes with secondary radishes growing from below. The top parts were hollow! Also – they’re not edible at this point. So…. if your radish plants look like this:

That’s too much! Here’s the whole group – the giant French Breakfast Radishes and the underdeveloped and failed watermelon radishes. I was really looking forward to those too…

Moving on. Mustard Greens and Arugula? Nope – those were overgrown and super bitter too. So, lesson learned. Greens are better when they’re young. Don’t be lazy and say – oh I’ll eat some tomorrow – enjoy them while they are at their prime!.

One more thing that happened that isn’t great. Tomatoes. Didn’t grow. At all. So they’re gone too – pulled them right out and will order some really cool heirloom seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I really wanted Hillbilly Tomatoes and they’ve got them. They also have some super interesting varieties.

We’re going to try Blue Cream Berries, Lucid Gem, and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye. Can’t wait to get them planted. We’ll have a later than normal harvest, but we’re all good with that!

Now, on to the good news! Garden is cleaned out and ready to continue and we’ve got zucchini and cauliflower going great guns. Take a look!

Stay tuned. I know that salad will be in our future with the gorgeous lettuces that are ready to eat!

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
