Rainy Days of Summer

Good news is that I haven’t had to water my garden a whole lot this summer. Bad news is that it is a bit soggy! This guy right here loves it though. Only one recent visitor to our garden.

So, where were we? Rain, did I mention that? Over the weekend, we had almost  3.5″ in less than three hours. I have photo evidence:

All this rain has been great as I haven’t had to water. However, nothing is doing really well right now. All of the lettuces that were left got really overgrown so I pulled them out. Bonus for the family of groundhogs that have been visiting! I brought them all to the back of the yard and put them in a pile. Next day – groundhog feast!

So – bullet points of what’s been happening:

  • We did eat all of the sugar snaps – a whole bowl full! Delicious. When it stops raining, I’ll go on out and pull those out as well to feed to the wildlife.
  • Haven’t planted the tomato seeds yet – I’m afraid they’ll get too soggy! I am hoping for end of the week.
  • Zucchini had a burst of the dreaded squash bugs. Now, they have tons of flowers, but I am seeing an odd thing – some leaves are yellowing and some have been lopped off entirely leaving just stalks. Have to figure that out. In the meantime, here are the lovely squash flowers for your viewing pleasure. This photo is actually a few days old – there are twice as many now!

  • And finally, it’s summer, so the cilantro bolted. We have still been using the flowers in some dishes, which are both tasty and pretty!

In the Beginning

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
