Watermelon Success!

So, you’re getting a repeat photo of an Orange Glo Watermelon. I am thrilled to report that the other was harvested last night and was amazing! Thing is, I was so excited, I forgot to get a picture!

So, the thing that I will say about these is that there are a LOT of seeds in them, but the taste is sweet and very melony. It was a guess on ripeness. The melon itself wasn’t particularly large, but wound up weighing about 11 pounds. You can see it hanging here:

The downside of hanging watermelons from a trellis are that they don’t get the typical light spot underneath them that tells you they’re ripe. So – I went with the “is the little tendril near the stem brown and dried” criteria as step one. Check. Now, tap the melon. Does it sound hollow? Check. Does it feel heavy? Check. Hold my breath, cut it down, chill it and cut it open – perfect! Yay!

We also are starting on tomato season. The Mortgage Lifters are great and wonderfully tasty!

Eggplants are moving right along as well and have already made it into the oven for roasting! In not so great news, the spaghetti squash experiment has failed due to pickle worms. Darned little green buggers ate holes in the squash and trashed them. Grrr. The plant is flowering again though, so maybe we’ll have luck the second time around.

So – I pledge to be better about taking photos so that you can actually see what I am writing about. 🙂

In the Beginning

Welcome! Follow along with me as I try gardening for the first time! My grandfather and mother are both amazing gardeners who could grow anything. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, flowers, figs, mangoes, papayas – nothing seemed to wither on the vine.

Then there is me.  I’ve never had success with plants, but that is going to change this summer!  The picture above is what I see in my mind. I’m hoping that my kitchen counter will look like this. (OK, not the mushrooms, but you get the idea).

I intend to detail the journey here on a weekly basis. We’ll have to wait to see how my garden grows. Hope you stick around!
