Gardening is such an overwhelming task for a beginner! The idea of getting the soil tilled, making sure that it was more nutritious than our current SC clay, planting, thinning, weeding, watering – WHEW – that was so much to think about.
Square Foot Gardening
Enter Square Foot Gardening. Someone at work lent me a book on the square foot gardening method and suddenly this seemed doable to me. All of the chores that seemed like such an undertaking were pared down to basics.
A thought as simple as only plant what you’ll eat was a light bulb moment for me.
Another – if the plant has to be thinned down to 6″ apart, only plant four in a one foot square and you won’t have to thin them. Instead of planting a whole package of seeds and then pulling out most, only plant four seeds and don’t do extra work.
So, I sat down, read the whole book front to back and started thinking that maybe I can do this. Maybe fresh vegetables will be in my future. Now the planning started…
